The Pondicherry University (PU), established underan Act of Parliament in the year 1985. It is located at about 165 km south of Chennai metropolitan city. It is well-connected by road and rail. A small aerodramme exists and flight services would start  shortly. There is a sea port which mainly caters to cargo and fishing. Pondicherry Univeristy is situated on the Chennai-Puducherry East Coast Road (ECR). where buses ply frequently from Chennai to Puducherry on the ECR route and  stop readily  on request, at the  University Gate. From Chennai, this is the most convenient  route to reach the university.
