The National Power Training Institute, North Eastern Region (NPTI-NER), was established in 2003 by the Ministry of Power, Government of India. Initially housed at the ASEB Complex in Narengi, Guwahati-26, NPTI-NER primarily conducted induction level training programs for ASEB Junior Managers/Assistant Managers, as well as short-term training programs. In August 2008, NPTI-NER commenced its first batch of a 52-week Post Graduate Diploma Course (PGDC) and a 26-week course on "Operation & Maintenance of Transmission & Distribution Systems" at its previous location, the Narengi Campus.
On July 1, 2009, NPTI-NER underwent a significant transition and commenced its operations at its dedicated campus in Kahilipara. Sprawling across 16 acres of land, the campus is conveniently located 10 kilometers from Guwahati Railway Station and 30 kilometers from G.B. International Airport, Guwahati. Transportation options such as taxis, auto rickshaws, and city buses are readily available at the railway station and airport, facilitating easy access to NPTI-NER.
The formal inauguration of the institute took place on October 30, 2009, with the honorable presence of Shri Shusilkumar Shinde, Union Minister of Power, Government of India; Shri H. S. Brahma, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India; Shri Pradyut Bardoloi, Minister of Power, Government of Assam; Shri A. K. Sachan, IAS, Chairman, ASEB; Shri I. P. Barooah, CMD, NEEPCO; Shri S. K. Garg, CMD, NHPC; Shri Gurdial Singh, Member (Planning), CEA; and Dr. N.S. Saxena, Director General, NPTI. As a pioneering institute in the North Eastern Region, NPTI (North Eastern Region) Guwahati plays a pivotal role in HRD in the Power Sector. It has trained numerous personnel in technical and managerial skill development programs, offering a range of professional and academic courses.
Currently, NPTI-NER, Guwahati conducts three long-term training programs, namely PGDC (52 weeks), PDC (52 weeks), and T&D-O&M (26 weeks). Additionally, the institute organizes short-term and need-based training programs throughout the year, catering to the requirements of power sector utilities. NPTI students benefit from extensive theoretical and practical training opportunities at various power stations, sub-stations, manufacturing plants, PSTI, CPRI, HLTC, the Simulator & GIS laboratory at NPTI-HQ, Faridabad.
