The National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) was originally set up as the Central Bureau of Correctional Services in 1961, under the Ministry of Home Affair, in pursuance of the recommendation emerging at various national forums. The Bureau was transferred to the Department of Social Security in 1964 and since 1975 the Institute is a subordinate office under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. National Institute of Social Defence is now an Autonomous Body vide Govt. of India Notification No. 10-3/2000-SD.
