Govt. College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Berhampore (GCETTB) was established in the central jail premises at Berhampore on 19th July 1927 as Government Silk Weaving and Dyeing Institute to impart training to local artisans engaged in silk production and silk weaving in Murshidabad district under the administrative control of Directorate of industries, Government of West Bengal.
Located about 200 km away from Kolkata, at the bank of the river Bhagirathi, Berhampore is the sixth largest city (after Kolkata, Howrah, Asansol, Siliguri and Malda) in West Bengal. After the Battle of Plassey in June 1757, this city was fortified in 1757 by the East India Company and it continued as a cantonment till 1870. Alongwith this legacy, Berhampore, at present, is ready to offer an array of modern amneties with rich and lively environment of cultural activities.
