Government Johnson College (GJC) was established as ‘Khatla Arts and Commerce College,’ on the 27th July, 1993 by the community leaders of Khatla. The College is named after Mr P.P. John, an educated minded and a prominent resident of Khatla, who generously donated a sum of Rupees 12 lakhs. Consequently, the commerce stream was dropped and the institution was renamed as Johnson College. Following the policy of Government of Mizoram, it was amalgamated with Bungkawn College, Aizawl (estd. 1992) on 24th Oct, 2002. The College has become an up and coming institution, winning laurels in academics as well as curricular activities.
