The Ganga as the National River of India on November 4, 2008. The Ganga or Ganges is the longest river of India. The River Ganga is flowing over 2,510 kms of mountains, valleys & plains. The Ganga originates in the snowfields of the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayas as the Bhagirathi River. The Ganga River is later joined by other rivers such as the Alaknanda, Yamuna, Son, Gumti, Kosi & Ghagra. There are two dams on the river. The one dam is at Haridwar & the other dam at Farakka.
For Hindus, the river ganga is the most sacred river on Earth. Many religious ceremonial occasions are held on the banks of the ganga river at the cities like Varanasi, Haridwar & Allahabad.
The Ganga river system is the largest in India having a number of perennial and non-perennial rivers originating in the Himalayas in the north and the Peninsula in the south, respectively.
The Ganges is the most sacred river to Hindus and is also a lifeline to millions of Indians who live along its course and depend on it for their daily needs. It is worshiped as the goddess Ganga in Hinduism It has also been important historically: many former provincial or imperial capitals (such as Patliputra, Kannauj, Kara, Kashi, Allahabad, Murshidabad, Munger, Baharampur, Kampilya and Kolkata) have been located on its banks.
