Jawaharlala Nehru (15 August 1947 - 27 May 1964)
Pandit. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of Independent India, who held charge continuously for 17years from 15th August 1947 to 27th May 1964. Pandit Nehruji was born in Allahabad on 14th November 1889. He was from Indian NationalCongress. He died on 27th May 1964 during his 4th term-tenure as the Prime Minister of India.
Guljarilala Nanada (27 May 1964 - 9 June 1964)
Gandhian to the core, was interim Prime Minister on two occasions after the sudden demise of Pt. Nehru (from may 27, 1964 to June 9, 1964), for 14 days, and again after the sudden demise of Lal Bahadur Shastri (from January 11 to 24, 1966), again for a period of 14 days. The Government of India honoured Nanda with the Bharat Ratna award in 1997. He was born in Sialkot on 4th July 1898 and died on 15th January 1998 in New Delhi. He was from Indian National Congress.
Lal Bahadur Shastri (9 June 1964 – 11 January 1966)
Lal Bahadur Shastri the second Prime Minister of India was born on 2nd October 1904 at Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. Though he came to power under the shadow cast of the ever-famous Pt. Nehru, he quickly won the hearts of all Indians, especially after routing Pakistan in the 1965 war. Indian still reverbrates with his slogan 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan '. He held office for 582 days, and died on 11th January 1966. He was from Indian National Congress.

Indira Gandhi (24 January 1966 – 24 March 1977)
Indira Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917, in Allahabad, she was the third Prime Minister of India . Indira Gandhi was born into the politically prominent Nehru family, her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, served as India’s first prime minister. Gandhi served three consecutive terms as prime minister, between 1966 and 1977, and another term beginning in 1980. In 1984, Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguard.
Morarji Desai (24 March 1977 – 28 July 1979)
Morarji Desai the fourth Prime Minister of India was the non-congress Prime Minister since Independence, he headed the Janata Party Government for 857 days. He was born on 29th February 1896 in Bhadeli village, now in the Bulsar district of Gujarat. He died on 10th April 1995.
Choudhary Charan Singh (28 July 1979 – 14 January 1980)
Charan Singh Known as a 'kisan' Prime Minister from Uttar Pradesh, was born on 23th December 1902 in Noorpur district of Uttar Pradesh. He was the fifth Prime Minister of Republic of India. He headed the Janta Party Government for 171 days. He is the only Prime Minister during whose reign the Lok Sabha did not meet even once. This was so because a day before the meeting of the Parliament the Congress party withdrew their support. He resigned from office and new elections were held after six months to elect the next Prime Minister. Thereafter he headed the Opposition until his death on 29th May 1987. His memorial in New Delhi was named Kisan Ghat because of his lifelong association with the farming communities of North India.

Rajiv Gandhi ( 31 October 1984 – 2 December 1989)
Rajiv Gandhi was the sixth Prime Minister of India. He was born 20th August 1944 in Mumbai. He took office after his mother's ( Indira Gandhi) assassination, he himself was assassinated on 21th May 1991. He became the youngest Prime Minister of India when he took office at the age of 40. He was from Indian National Congress.
Vishwanath Pratap Singh (2 December 1989 – 10 November 1990)
Vishwanath Pratap Singh was the seventh Prime Minister of India. He was born on 25th June 1931 in Allahabad and died on 27th November 2008 in New Delhi. He was from Jantadal
Chandra Shekhar (10 November 1990-21 June 1991)
Chadra Shekhar was born in Hindu Rajput farming family on 17th April 1927 in Ibrahimpatti a village in Ballia district of Uttarpradesh. He was the eighth Prime Minister of India from Samajwadi Jantadal Party. He was known for abiding by the parliamentary conventions and was honoured with the inaugural Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 1995. He died on 8th July 2007 in New Delhi.
P.V Narasimha Rao (21 June 1991-16 May 1996)
The first ever leader from South to hold this office, he ruled for full five years (1, 785 days). He was the Ninth Prime Minister of India and was from Indian National Congress. Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao was born in 28 June 1921 at Lakkampally village near Narsampet in Warangal District to a Telugu Karanam family. He died on 23th December 2004 in New Delhi.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee (16 May 1996 – 1 June 1996)
Vajpayee is the first 'bachelor' Prime Minister of India. He was the tenth Prime Minister of India from 16th May – 31th May 1996 and second time from 19th March 1998 to 13th May 2004. He was born on 25th December 1924 in Gwalior. With his swearing in as a Prime Minister he has been the only Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to occupy the office of the Prime Minister of India through three successive mandates. He was from Bharatia Janta Party.
H. D. Deve Gowda (1 June 1996 – 21 April 1997)
H.D. Deve Gowda was the eleventh Prime Minister of India and fourteenth Chief Minister of Karnatka. He was born on 18th May, 1933 in Haradanahalli village of Holenarasipura taluk, Hassan District, Karnataka. He was from Jantadal.
Inder Kumar Gujral (21 April 1997 – 19 May 1998)
Gujral was born on 4th December 1919 to Avtar Narain and Pushpa Gujral in [Jhelum] ]in a jat sikh family. He was the twelfth Prime Minister of India. He also participated in the Indian independence movement and was jailed in 1942 during the Quit India Movement. As a student he became a member of the Communist Party of India. He was from Jantadal. He died on 30th November 2012 in Gurgaon, Haryana.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee (19 May 1998 – 22May 2004)
