At a ceremony held today, July 19, 2013 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Shri Justice Palanisamy Sathasivam was sworn in as the 40 th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President Pranab Mukherjee.
Mr Justice Sathasivam, 64, succeeded Mr Justice Altamas Kabir, who retired yesterday on attaining the age of 65.
Mr Justice Sathasivam is due to retire on April 26, 2014 and will, thus, have a tenure of about nine months in office.
UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley, NDA Working Chairperson L K Advani, Vice President Hamid Ansari, CPI leader D Raja, several Union ministers were present at the ceremony. Mr. Justice Sathasivam was born on 27 April 1949, and has B.A and B.L degrees and had enrolled as an advocate on 25 July 1973 at Chennai.
