Electrical engineering is one of the important field of engineering. Which deals with the development and manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, and the design and implementation of electrical generation and distribution.
In modern world now it covers the range of subtopics including power, electronics, control systems, signal processing and telecommunications. Electrical engineer - designs and develops electrical systems and components to high specifications of economy, safety and reliability. Electrical engineers usually manage projects within a team.
Engineering graduates usually start work under the supervision of experienced engineers and are gradually given more responsibilities after some time as they gain experience. Some engineers with experience and additional education, move into administration or management. Many high-level executives in industry began their careers in engineering.
Career Prospectus
Electrical engineers create technologies that connect the world and help make our lives better. They are required by the industries manufacturing all the household and office appliances like refrigerators, televisions, microwaves, computer and many electronic items.
In our age of satellite-transmitted television and transcontinental computer networks, these engineers are high in demand. Electrical engineering is often associated with power generation and distribution of power. Power generation involves the generation of electrical power from a variety of sources: hydro-electrical, thermal coal power, nuclear, as well as renewable sources of power such as solar and wind power. Electrical engineers can also find employment in the above mentioned fields. Some more work area are given below.
- Government departments
- Mining industry
- Municipalities
- Universities of technology
- Manufacturers of electrical items
- Private engineering consultants
- Self-employment, with enough experience, and can start own manufacturing or engineering company
Eligibility
- For a diploma in engineering, candidate must have passed 10th board exam successfully with at least 50% marks from recognized board. Various polytechnics offer diploma in various disciplines of engineering. The duration for diploma is 3 years.
- For admission in a bachelor’s degree,(B. Eor B. BTech) the candidate must have passed the higher secondary school certificate (10+2) examination with at least 50% marks(60% for IITs) in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects. For IITs, It is mandatory to qualify in the Joint Entrance Examinations (J.E.E). The duration for the course is 4 years. Diploma holders can also get direct admission into second year of engineering in the same stream in which they have completed their diploma.
- For a master's level course, one must complete the bachelor's degree program successfully. Further Studies After graduating students can go in for postgraduate studies ie M.E or M.Tech. The duration for the course is 2 years.
- Further studies up to Ph.D. level are also an option for anyone interested in Research or Academics.
- AMIE Associate Memberships of the Institution of Engineers also offers courses in Electrical engineering which is equivalent to BE/BTech provided by other institutes/universities.
Remuneration
The average starting monthly salary of electrical engineering graduates in India ranges between Rs. 15,000/- – Rs.25, 000/-. Fresh graduates from elite technological institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Birla Institute of Technology get more remuneration as compared to others.
Senior electrical engineers with good working experience can earn between Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 80,000 per month. The pay-package in foreign countries is much higher as compared to India.
